A recent survey of helicopters on the Australian register in preparation for AustralianAviation’sAnnual Helicopter Directory [October issue] has uncovered 13 Robinsons that have not previously been listed in the register update. This brings the total number of this type flying in Australia to 204 comprising of 27 R22s, 30 R22 Alphas, 135 R22 Betas, 9 of the high performance R22HPs and 3 of the amphibious Mariner. The R22 is produced by Frank Robinson at a small airport near Los Angeles and considering the first aircraft was only imported into Australia during 1981, the 1991 numbers are a magnificent sales achievement.

BK117 BKZ is the second of its type to fly in Australia, the first being the NSW’s Police machine which unfortunately crashed into Sydney Harbour some years ago. BKZ is operated by Child Care and is based at the Royal Children’s Hospital at Camperdown near Sydney. The Aerospatiale Puma has been seen in Australia before but not the Super Puma, at least not until now. BHX is an SA332L Super Puma which has had two stints in Canada and one in the USA before joining Bristow Helicopters at Dyce, Scotland as G-BRWE. The big twin engined machine is still with Bristows but now based at Karratha, WA on oil exploration work.
