Three pre-Kahu Skyhawks take off from Rarotonga during the early 1980s. Fiscal restrictions led to their upgrade instead of replacement.
New Zealand Defence Review
NZ Defence Review of Crucial Importance to Region
Across the Tasman, a major review of New Zealand’s defence force is well under way. Army, navy and air force are all within the gamut of this wide ranging analysis.
Recommendations relating to the rationalisation of assets, as well as the future of the Skyhawk force have already been made. Sub-reviews affecting the RNZAF’s P-3K Orion maritime surveillance capability, and its ageing air transport fleet are scheduled to report their findings on 31 October.
If all the recommendations made by the review are adopted they could well have far reaching effects on New Zealand’s defences, and potentially also on the special defence relationship with Australia. This has always been unique; and depending on the final outcome at the end of October, will either become very much closer or dwindle as New Zealand seeks significant reductions in the size of its defence forces.
