Dr Allan Hawke has taken up the position of Defence’s Deputy Secretary Strategic and Intelligence, replacing Dr Paul Dibb. Brian Leggett has been appointed SITA’s Assistant General Manager Sales and Marketing for Australasia and the South Pacific. Bob Mainerd has been named Airport Mgr Sydney by Northwest Airlines. John Mant, a partner of Phillips Fox, solicitors, Sydney, has been appointed to the Board of the CAA. Wayne Newell has been appointed Marketing/Planning Mgr for Australian Airlines. Peter Ryan has been appointed Eastern Australia Airlines General Mgr. Capt Alan Terrell has succeeded Buck Brooksbank as chairman of the CAA’s Australian Aviation Advisory Committee. Wes Willoughby has retired from the CAA to establish his own consulting business.

Bottom Line

Hawker de Havilland has reported preliminary accounts for the first six months of 1991 which show an operating profit before tax of $5m compared to $7. 1m for the same period 1990. Sales were $122. 9m (down from $126. 4 same period 1990); however the order book remains strong at over $600m. After abnormals (industrial action, redundancies etc. ) nett profit was close to a break even result, compared to a $5. 7m profit for the same period 1990. Boeing recorded net earnings of $US763m (up from $US689m same period 1989) from sales of $US13. 9bn ($US13. 4bn same period 1989) for the first half of 1991. The improved results over 1989 were due primarily to increased commercial aircraft sales and lower defence and space business operating losses, partially offset by 777 development costs. The company sold just 113 commercial jets (down from 212) and 13 Dash 8s (up from 8); it delivered 4 military 7078, 104 7378, 32 7478, 42 7578, 32 7678 and 38 Dash 8s (total 252, up from 216).
