Airline Affairs
Liberals Plan Open Skies:
The Liberal Party’s aviation policy contains a few surprises, if plans announced by its shadow aviation minister, David Jull, see the light of day when next there is a change of government. Among the policies announced are the complete sell-off of Qantas along with all of Australia’s airports to private interests to finance their expansion into “something more than just garages for planes” (shopping centres, community centres, etc) to make them pay. In addition, just about any world airline will be allowed to operate into Australia providing it meets our operational requirements.
This is to stimulate a planned 10 million tourists per year coming to Australia by the turn of the century, and to further help that effort, the shadow minister also wants to open up new international gateways at places such as Broome and the Queensland resort islands. Further, the establishment of new domestic airlines will be encouraged and all travel barriers between Australia and New Zealand will be dismantled so that any airline could fly from any port on one side of the Tasman to any port on the other.
