Eva Air Launching Operations From Humble Beginnings

Taiwan’s Eva Air, the latest international carrier to serve Australia and barely four months old, is also the product of a remarkable self made transport baron.

Mr Chang Yung-fa, creator, chairman and chief executive of the giant Evergreen shipping company and its latest sibling, Eva Airways, commenced his working life as a humble deckhand aboard a Japanese tramp steamer. From this lowliest of maritime rankings Chang worked hard and eventually graduated to ship’s captain before transferring to shore duties in the shipping company’s corporate office.

With a fair level of practical experience behind him he then assembled a small consortium of partners to buy his own small steamer and form what was to ultimately become the world’s largest container shipping company, Evergreen Marine Corporation. Evergreen now operate more than 50 very large high speed container ships plying a world wide scheduled system that remains unequalled in its sophistication, on time performance and fiscal productivity. Evergreen also owns over 200,000 containers and its ships are regular visitors to Australia.
