On The Airbands

I am sitting here in my Sydney office surrounded by my receivers, with one in particular occupying pride of place amongst the herd. It’s the Signal Communications Corporation R-535 VHF/UHF aviation band receiver, sent to me recently by Mike Faulkner from Hawker Pacific Skyshop for evaluation.

Well I have evaluated, and have reached the following conclusion. If you wish to listen to aero VHF and UHF and nothing more, look no further than the R-535. It has 60 frequency memories, is small enough to fit into thespace in your car dashboard normally occupied by your AM/FM car radio, has a brilliant digital display readout, and tunes just like an aircraft radio. All the conventions of scanning radios are gone with this little beauty. Cursor placement along with up/down arrow buttons replaces some of the more conventional controls such as “manual”, “program” or “scan” on other receivers. Available from all Hawker Pacific Skyshops for $495. 00. A brilliant buy, whether you’re a novice, or an experienced airband listener. I give the R-535 my wholehearted recommendation, it performs and looks so good!

Hawker Pacific also have a hand held receiver, the R-537S, which is ultra tiny, knocks the Tandy Jetstream in performance for six, and has both tuning VFO or two fixed frequency crystal positions. Price for the R-537S is a very fair $190. 00. Two radios you really should really investigate further.
