• US President Ronald Reagan announced on 2 October that the USAF will receive 100 of the LRCA Rockwell B-1 derivative, with deployment to commence by 1986 and the second and fourth prototypes will be modified to the new standard. There will be a continuation on the development of a more advanced bomber which will utilise stealth characteristics for deployment during the 1990s.
The Minister for Defence, Mr Killen, announced on 20 October that the McDon- nell Douglas F-18 Hornet has been selected as the RAAF’s New Tactical Fighter (NTF). The cost of the overall program to acquire 75 Hornets will be $2,430m in August 1981 dollars with the first delivery expected before the end of 1984 and the final aircraft to be handed over by 1990.
