Australia’s War Diary
50 Years Ago . . .
November 1-Britain. Bad weather and rough seas interfere with operations from Pembroke Dock by 10 Squadron RAAF and prevail throughout November so flying boats can only operate on 11 days.
November 3 – Britain. Although BOAC aircraft now fly between England and Cairo, 10 Squadron Sunderlands are still employed on lengthy Middle East detachments. In a typical scenario, S/Ldr Reg Burrage and crew fly to Malta in W3986/RB-U between November 3-6 carrying 14 fighter pilots, return to Gibraltar on the 8th and two days later carry more fighter pilots to Cairo. After two sorties to Aboukir, Burrage returns to Gibraltar on the 19th with eleven passengers. Returning to England early on the 22nd, he has to turn back to Gibraltar because of a gale warning. On his way again that evening, he will at last reach Pembroke Dock after a brief clash with a He 111.
