American Looks at Rolls-Royce:
American Airlines, in conjunction with Rolls-Royce, is examining a major life extension program for its 49-strong fleet of McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10 widebody trijets.
Apart from avionics and structural modifications and installing a two crew cockpit, the major part of the proposed package is replacing the DC-10s’ existing early series. General Electric CF6 turbofans with 43,600lb thrust Rolls-Royce RB211-535F5 power- plants, similar to those installed on American’s current batch of Boeing 757s. Such a conversion would reduce fuel consumption by as much as 25% with significant improvements in the areas of maintenance and reliability. The RB211 was never offered as a standard option on new build DC-10s.
