A Republic 757. Northwest took over this carrier in 1986, greatly broadening its domestic route presence though taking on a corporate and operational culture that is still proving a problem to integrate halfa decade later. (Boeing)

Northwest Aspiring to Become the Supreme Us Airline

Presently positioning itself to acquire a strategic stake in Qantas, Northwest Airlines is somewhat of an enigma amongst America’s major air transport league, having its structure and corporate philosophy radically altered since its unwilling takeover in 1989. However; in a world tending towards conservative business practices is Northwest really an internationally ranked mega carrier or just another debt-burdened giant aspiring to grand strategies with borrowed funds?

One of four US carriers serving the trans Pacific market into Australia, Northwest Airlines has also been to date only the second airline to publicly declare its interest in acquiring a share in our national carrier, Qantas.

The Federal Government is selling 49% of Qantas with a maximum of 35% of the grand total available to overseas carriers. Northwest is hoping to obtain the bulk of that 35% share, something that would conservatively require funding of between $300m and $450m. However, is Northwest realistically in a position to raise such amounts given that its debt burden is generally estimated at around $US6. 2bn on an asset base of less than $US700m.
