The F-106 was one of the few USAF aircraft of the that was not at some time during its operational life involved in actual combat. This particular Delta Dart is been Tyndall AFB Janda, circa 1970. The much improved F-106 took over from the earlier F-102A and was also for a time used by the air-to-air combat manoeuvring schools due to its similar profile and turn rate to that of the MiG-21. Most surviving Darts are nowadays used as QF-106 target drones, a case of going from the hunter to the hunted. (USAF)

Convair’s Delta Fighters
Convair’s highly distinctive F-102 Delta Dagger was the first supersonic delta aircraft to achieve service status. Then, planned only as a variant, the F-106 Delta Dart emerged as a sleek and powerful interceptor that went on to protect American skies fornearly 30 years . . .
Origins of the F-102 project date back to January, 1949, when an ADO (Advanced Development Objective) was issued for a new fighter capable of exceeding the performance of projected Soviet jet bombers.
