MD-12 on Offer:
McDonnell Douglas has begun offering its MD-12 long range trijet to the world’s airlines, preparatory to a formal launch in 1992 if sufficient provisional orders have been booked.
The MD-12 is an enlarged, longer range development of the new MD-11 which in turn is derived from the DC-10. With a wing span of 213ft (64. 9m) and a length of 242ft 073. 8m) dimensionally it will be bigger than a Boeing 747 and be capable of carrying typically 375 passengers in a three class configuration or 520 passengers all economy at 31in pitch. Its maximum design range is 8,000 nautical miles (14,800km) with 375 passengers and 7,650nm (14,170km) with 445 passengers. Power will be provided by engines in the 75-77,000lb thrust class (GE90, PW4484 or RR Trent 775) and the design maximum take-off weight will be 897,000lb (406 tonnes).
