Darwin Remembers

19 February 1992 is a significant day in Australian military history as it marks the 50th anniversary of the day the Australian mainland was bombed for the first time, the day the war literally arrived on Australia’s doorstep.

On 19 February 1942, Australia’s northernmost city, Darwin, was twice bombed by Japanese forces. These were the first of 64 raids on Darwin. The 50th anniversary of those first raids falls in February next year, and to commemorate the occasion, and of the Northern Territory’s substantial involvement in the war generally, numerous activities are planned. The following summarises the events of 50 years ago and those planned to commemorate them during the course of 1992

Darwin received the attentions of 81 Japanese aircraft on that February 1942 morning, followed by a second raid by 54 enemy aircraft a couple of hours later.
