On The Airbands
Did I see you at the Richmond Airshow? Plenty of radio frequencies to keep even the most dyed-in-the-wool aircraft monitoring buff on his or her toes! Lots of frequencies were added for specific purposes to purposes to the usual Richmond VHF and UHF channels, and existing ones were used for very different than normal purposes.
A VHF ATIS was added to assist non-military pilots who couldn’t dial the usual 316. 3 Mhz UHF, with the VHF version transmitted on 126. 3 MHz. Frequency 122. 1 was used for marshalling aircraft, while 134. 1 was taken from its GCA role and turned into the ground frequency. 133. 3 was introduced and utilised as the helicopter ground channel, callsign “chopper ground”, while 126. 8 was put into action as an area frequency for the nearby Schofields Airport. I also heard the frequency 118. 8 bandied around, but was unable to determine its usage simply by monitoring.
Roulettes VHF air/air frequency 133. 9 was in use as they arrived at the field, but when the airshow started that frequency was quickly abandoned and Richmond Approach frequency 135. 9 was used. T his channel is also rebroadcast on 119. 7. Truly, where the Roulettes are concerned, you never know just where they are going to be frequency-wise at any given moment! But it keeps you alert chasing them, so it’s all good fun.
