Regional Airline Directory
Australia’s Regional Airlines have just been through another 12 months in which they have had to contend with a number of major problems. One wonders how it is we have so many airlines, what keeps them going and just how they manage to survive.
Australia like many parts of the World is at present going through a severe recession. On top of that, drought conditions are being experienced in many parts of the country. So why are passenger numbers still on the increase since it is from the country towns that the regional operators get most of their traffic. As a result of airline deregulation, which commenced in Australia on 31 October 1990, passenger numbers on the primary trunk routes are soaring to record levels (refer major feature elsewhere this issue). The demand for seats is as a result of the huge drop in air fares and the main domestic operators are now having trouble getting enough seats in the air. For the regional operators however, its mainly an as you were situation. Most can only watch and wish that some of these thousands of new passengers, who are taking to the air for the first time, would filter onto their network.
For many regional operators Sydney Airport is still a major problem. While more flights are being handled by ATC as a result of Simops, the Government Peak Period Surcharge has resulted in extra costs (refer p. 47 Oct 91 A A). The Regional operator now has two choices and this is to pay the additional landing fees and as a result raise your fares or to operate outside the peak periods with the resultant loss of the use of your aircraft, while it sits on the ground at Sydney Airport.
