AMATS Implementation – First Impressions
Amats Implementation – First Impressions
The first stage of AMATS has been implemented and contrary to some prior alarmist predictions, the sky has not fallen in.
It is early days yet, however, it was a little sad to recently see a Flight Service Officer fighting a rear guard battle by claiming in a letter to the Canberra Times (Jan 1, 92), that the recent Anglesea tragedy could be related to the changes brought in by the CAA on Dec 12, 91. In the letter, the claim was made that prior to Dec 12, the aircraft would have been in full radio contact with Melbourne Flight Service and that any problems arising could have been advised to the latter. It was further stated that Flight Service could have advised of any hazardous conditions that would have affected the flight.
In a reply through the Canberra Times published on Jan 8, 92, the CAA General Manager Air Traffic Services, Buck Brooksbank, refuted the allegations and stated that although the accident was still under investigation, he could at this point confirm that the aircraft had been in radio contact with Melbourne Flight Service. He then went on to make the point that the CA A encourages the use of radio whenever pilots are in doubt or feel they might be in trouble.
