PanAm hedged their bets during the fifties with equipment, often buying similar planes from both Boeing and Douglas. Depicted is one of PAA's DC-7C aircraft which essentially performed the same mission as the Boeing Stratocruiser, which, due to its awful reputation for destroying engines was often referred to as the 'Boeing Trimotor'. As PAA entered thejet age the great airline again hedged its bets and acquired both the 707 and DC-8 and though it had inherited DC-10s through its acquisition of National it still didn't stop the airline from ordering the essentially similar Lockheed Tristar

There have been many casualties in the fickle airline business in recent years, some of them long established and indeed household names. But the demise of Pan American World Airways in early December 1991 after a lengthy period of unprofitability somehow brings it all home.
Here was an airline which for so many years was regarded as the standard by which most others were judged; the airline was the symbol of the United States on international air routes; the airline which took the risk of introducing the two most important international airliners of the modern era- the Boeing 707 and 747.
