Two US airlines with regional backgrounds blossomed after deregulation.

From modest beginnings, both grew amid megacarriers without being bought out. Both were reclassified, based on comparable revenues, as “major” airlines the same year. Both were products of the West, where independence and self reliance are esteemed. Yet, one of these airlines has reported its 19th consecutive year of profits, and the other is now in bankruptcy.
