 Keating Rings in the Changes:

The Prime Minister’s economic statement of February 26 had strong implications for the airline industry (refer Recce), and although sweeping changes have been announced, they were for the most part as predicted in our last issue’s Stop Press section.

Broadly speaking, the changes include the establishment of a single Australia/New Zea- land market, the end of Qantas being barred from purchasing an interest in Australian Air- lines, permission for Qantas to operate Aus- tralian domestic services by 1994 (for Air New Zealand to do likewise by the same date) and the go ahead for Australia’s domestic airlines to fly across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand by 1993.
