50 Years Ago . . .
April 1 – New Guinea. Japanese landings at Hollandia and Sorong. Malta. Amid many raids, Ju 87 probables are claimed by Sgt Tony Boyd, now in 185 Squadron, and Sgt Jack Pauley of 229 Squadron. Pauley bails out of his Hurricane and is admitted to hospital with shrapnel wounds.
Eastern Front. The first arctic convoy, PQ-13, arrives at Murmansk. Five of the 19 merchant ships have been sunk, two by air attack. April 2 – Australia. Japanese raids on Darwin continue. Seven bombers and three Zeros attack fuel storage tanks.
