The prototype 747 was originally retired in March 1990.
Qantas Cat III
Qantas Boeing 747-300s, -400s and SPs have been given approval to make Category Ill instrument landings at five British and European airports, London Heathrow and Gatwick, Manchester, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. Category Ill allows the aircraft to land In poor visibility with a Runway Visual Range (RVR) of just 200 metres and a decision heighCol 20 feet. Qantas aircraft previously operated to Category II standards with a RVR of 350 metres and a decision height of 100 feet. The approval means fewer diversions because of weather and therefore improved punctuality.
