Flight Simulators Come of Age

The flight simulator is now recognised as a reliable, cost effective and environmentally friendly method of pilot training. In the following article, Tony Corke and Capt Bob Christle of Air Canada examine the flight simulator’s technical progress over the past four decades and at changing training techniques.

The flight simulator, as we know it today, began to evolve in the late 1950s.

Early models were large, cumbersome machines with many cabinets of electrical equipment. Flight simulation of a specific aircraft type was created by use of a large and complex analog computer comprising vast numbers of mechanical servos and tube amplifiers.
