Ilyushin has purchased more than 80 CFM56 engines to be fitted on 20 ll-86s for Aeroflot. The purchase also includes provision for engines to be fitted to export versions of the airliner. Ten Pratt and Whitney PW2037s as fitted to the 757 and C-17 are also destined to go to Russia for testing aboard Tu-204 and ll-96M aircraft. Rolls-Royce's R B211-535 is also slated for the Tu-204. Commercial Aircraft Sales
The new company, called Western Australian Specialty Alloys, will operate from a site near Perth where it will convert raw materials mainly mined and processed in Australia into superalloy metals used in the manufacture of jet engines. The two American companies each have a 25% interest in the operation and Western Aerospace has 50%.
Production will began next year and will reach about 3 million tonnes per annum by 1996. Sales are estimated at more than $400m over the next decade.
