Malaysian is essentially three airlines in one with a need to serve markets ranging from short field Twin Otter operations through to regional jet services and long range 747 operations. The airline's regional services are served largely by its growing fleet of Boeing 737s. Depicted here is a 737-200 in the 'old' MAS livery, a type that is rapidly being replaced by what will eventually be SE Asia's largest fleet of 737-400s.

Malaysian Planning for the 90s

Record Growth Making Malaysia Airlines a Haven for Aussie Pilots

Rapidly expanding Malaysia Airlines, facing a wave of retirements from its present technical flight crews and a steady stream of new aircraft being introduced into the fleet, will look abroad for expatriate pilots for some years to come. Many will inevitably come from Australia.

Flight operations director, Captain Hassan Ahmad, in a recent Kuala Lumpur interview said that to plug the gap from solely Malaysian sources he would need to recruit and train some 200 cadet pilots a year. The airline’s training programme uses both the Malaysian flight training school at Melaka and courses in Australia as well.

“We are only getting about half this number,” the veteran airman said. Captain Hassan, who was the first Malaysian pilot to win his commercial licence, has been twice asked to stay on after his formal retirement date, despite a major heart bypass operation, to plan the operational future of the fast growing SE Asian airline and implement his plans to ensure the company’s pilots regard themselves as key executives in carrying out its reorientation into a customer driven airline.
