Long plagued by poor reliability and high operating costs, approximately 1,000 Textron Lycoming ALF502 engines will be recalled? by the manufacturer. Per block hour maintenance costs of $323 compare poorly with other types such as $88 for the 737-300. Textron will replace the unreliable parts with components from its newer LF507 engine

MDC Considers MD-12 Redesign:
McDonnell Douglas is reported to be considering a massive redesign of its next airliner project, the longrange MD-12.
Originally proposed as a stretched development of the new MD-11 trijet (itself based on the earlier DC-10), the new MD-12 could feature little commonality with its predecessors and be offered in two, three or four engined versions by the use of anew common supercritical section wing structure. Obviously, the tail mounted engine would be deleted in two and four engined versions and if either of the latter went ahead it is probably unlikely that the expense of developing a trijet model would beundertaken. By using a common wing for two and four engined versions, MDC would be following the philosophy established by Airbus with its A330 and A340.
