Wreckage of 1927 se5a Crash Recovered

In February a RAAF group recovered the remains of an RAAF SE5a, 65 years after it crashed on May 11, 1927.

It was while returning from Canberra with photographs of the opening of the then new Federal Parliament House that SE5aA2-8, piloted by Sgt Orme Denny, experienced engine failure. Denny force landed in trees near Mansfield, north east of Melbourne. Although suffering minor injuries Denny walked out of the bush after wrapping the photographic plates in his flying suit and putting them into a hollow tree for safe keeping.
