Having operated for 10,000 hours without removal for maintenance, four Pratt & Whitney PW4000s of a Northwest 747-400 have set a new industry milestone. The aircraft was delivered in August 1989, and while individual engines have operated for over 20,000 hours without being removed form the aircraft, to have all four engines remaining on wing for 10,000 hours is considered a major accomplishment. MD-12 Design Firms:
After studying various configurations with two, three and four engines (refer p7 May 92 AA), McDonnell Douglas has introduced a revolutionary new design for its MD-12 long range airliner which is planned to enter service in 1997.
The new airliner will have four engines and features a double deck widebody fuselage capable of carrying up to 511 passengers in a typical three class layout. McDonnell Douglas is also planning a ‘family’ of MD-12s including freighter and combi versions. The 511 passenger version will be capable of flying 7,100 nautical miles (13,100km) non stop and a planned longer range variant will be able to travel 7,800nm (14,400km). A stretched 600 passenger version is also being studied as is a twin engined variant carrying 500 passengers. The four engined MD-12 is expected to be formally launched later this year, possibly at September’s Farn- borough Air Show in England.
