Peace Costs Jobs:

The reduction of military tensions between the West and the former Soviet Bloc may have reduced the chances of global conflict but has also increased the chances of unemployment for people working in defence related industries as defence budgets decline. A Swedish report says that between 1988 and 1990 more than 300,000 defence industry jobs were lost in European NATO countries alone and between 185,000 and 350,000 further jobs will be lost in the near future. Further, a number of mergers, takeovers and international joint ventures has left 55% of Europe’s defence business in the hands of the region’s ten largest companies. Interestingly, research and development activity has continued unabated and has in fact been increased in some countries.

Clever Paint:

Australia has offered the use of the Darwin air force base for training to the Republic of Singapore Air Force, which has a requirement for the use of an air weapons range. The offer follows the loss of the Crow Valley Training Range in the Philippines. The RSAF already trains regularly in Australia, often staging out of Amberley and Williamtown and is a regular participant m the annual Pitch Black exercises. (Bill Lines)

Researchers at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) in Melbourne have developed ‘smart’ paints, which, when applied to various objects can make them cool, concealed and less combustible. By substituting synthetic solar absorbing pigments paint with reflective pigments, the paint can cool an object by as much as D-15deg celsius. An obvious application for this is pilots ‘ pilots’helmets which until now have had to be white in order to enhance reflectivity but at the expense of high visibility. The new paint can also be of any colour.
