Hands up who has realised that aircraft such as Springbok 281/282, or the Qantas service to and from Johannes burg are actually guarded on HF frequencies belonging to South African Airways in the western Indian Ocean region?
It’s true, as Springbok Johannesburg HF is the only facility adequately covering that area of the pond. Frequencies to listen out on are: 5532, 8933, 11354, 13330, 17925, and 21964. Between 0430 zulu and 1630 zulu, 8933, 13330, 17925 and 21964 are the preferred channels, while 1630 zulu to 0400 zulu, either 5532, or 11354 is selected. Qantas 63 is the corresponding Qantas flight to Johannesburg and also uses the Springbok Johannesburg net for ATC aireps normally carried on MWARA frequency families. The only situation of its kind in the world! Qantas flight 23 Is the Harare service now operating once a week instead of the twice weekly frequency the service did have. You can hear it call Afro Harare on 8949 and 17944 enroute.
Qantas Melbourne has moved VHF company frequency from its old allocation 1319 to new allocation 130. 85 MHz, turning over Its former frequency to Alitalia Melbourne. And something else of interest to monitors who are prone to fantasise about the delightful service to be found on some airlines they enjoy listening to Virgin Atlantic Airlines are now providing the services of fully trained masseurs on board in an effort to relieve Upper/Business Class passengers (and the tech crew!) from jetlag.
