Four Canberras from No 2 Squadron were flown over Brisbane and surrounding areas on June 30 to mark the withdrawal of the type from RAAF service after nearly 30 years. • A contract was signed in Washington DC on June 30 for ten additional Lockheed P-3C Orions for the RAAF. They will replace No 11 Squadron’s P-3Bs which will be traded-in on the new aircraft. The contract was between the Australian Government and Lockheed rather than the USN which is usually the case.
Flight trials of the first VCO K Mk 2 tanker for the RAF, the ex BOAC VCIO G-ARVG, commenced at Filton on June 22. It is the first of five K Mk 2s (VC30 conversions) and four K Mk 3 (Super VC10 conversions) due to commence service at Brize Norton next year. More will be converted when funding permits and as an interim measure, some Vulcans will be adapted as tankers together with some additional Hercules to support the Hercules already capable of air refuelling.
