Air Safety – Lessons from Kegworth
Crew Lessons From Kegworth
The voluminous report of the British Midlands accident at Kegworth in January, 1989 wasably condensed by Macarthur Job (refer p60 Mar 92 AA) into just a few pages. Space no doubt precluded him from analysing further the way in which the emergency was handled by the crew.
Hindsight and an armchair always make problems simpler to solve. Who of us can know that we would do anything differently in the same circumstances? But considering what did happen might help us to review our own work practices.
When the emergency occurred, the first officer was the pilot flying. Should the captain have taken over, reversing their roles at such a critical time? The captain of a ship does not take over the helm in an emergency, but supervises the overall operation. There is much to be said for the view that actual aircraft handling should be left to the first officer in such a situation, leaving the captain free to concentrate on analysing the problem and making decisions.
