Airline Traffic Growth Forecast
Strong Air Traffic Growth Forecast for 20 Year Period
By late 1992 the world economy will begin to rebound and passenger traffic will resume its more usual growth trend, claims an in-depth study by McDonnell Douglas.
Traffic within Asia and between Asia and other regions will lead the advance, with North and mid Pacific traffic up by 15. 7% and intra FarEast traffic up13. 4%. US domestic traffic is expected to grow a substantial 6. 8% as business activity rebounds and tourism increases in response to rising consumer confidence, though how recentriots in the US will affect these figures has yet to be determined. However, worldwide real yields should decline as airlines wage intensive promotional campaigns to increase travel demand. Under this scenario, total world passenger traffic rises 8. 2% as international and domestic traffic climb 10. 2% and 6. 4 per cent, respectively. Long term prospects for world passenger traffic include average growth of 6. 5% annually over the 1990-2010 period. International traffic is projected to grow7. 8% and domestic traffic 5%.
International traffic will continue to outpace domestic traffic; by 2010, international traffic will make up 61% of total traffic.
