Historic Milestone for NZ Aviation

New Zealand’s $NZ92 million Airways Modernization Project (AMP) is an historic milestone for aviation, says Rex Loach, chairman of the Airways Corporation of NZ.

“We now offer airlines and their passengers one of the most modern air traffic management systems in the world,” he comments in an Airways publication. AMP is a system which will continue to be “upgraded so we never again fall behind in the use of technology. Perhaps the most important and certainly the most unique feature of the project is that it has been funded entirely by the Corporation, not at the taxpayers’ expense. In three years, with the assistance of French contractors Thomson-CSF we have made a much needed 30 year technological leap and upgraded our systems to world standards. ” Mr Loach also notes in Airways that AMP has been an investment in “our personnel with more than 400 operations and technical staff being retained. They have had to make significant adjustments in their work patterns and methods, learn how to use and support an entirely new system, all the while continuing to perform their usual jobs. ” He also observes that the next major effort involving the Airways Corporation is the $NZ26m Navigational Systems Modernisation Project due for completion by 1995.
