The new Allison GMA 3007 which will power the Citation X has been successfully test flown mounted on a Citation VII. The high bypass turbofan will be rated at 60001b thrust, providing the X with a cruising speed of Mach .88. Air New Zealand has seconded Warren Gwynne to the Orient Airlines Association headquartered in Manilla. James Armstrong has been appointed AWA International Marketing Manager for electronic warfare products. Vice Admiral Alan Beaumont is to take up the position of Chief of the Defence Force in April 1993 in the rank of Admiral, succeeding General Peter Gration who is to retire. Restructuring at HdH sees Tony Carolan heading the Manufacturing Division, Andrew D’Apice Repair and Overhaul and Jim Caterson Systems Integration. John Schaap, Bill Dix and John Ward have been appointed to the new three person board of Australian Airlines. Ken Crawford has been appointed the acting GM of Eastwest. BOTTOM LINE Lufthansa has reported a pre tax first. half loss of 542 million German marks ($524m). The airline blames the general economic situation, the weak American. dollar and global over capacity for its prob- lems. Fokker net turnover for the first half of 1992 was almost NLG 1. 9bn ($A1. 6bn) which is 22% more than for the comparable period in 1991. Despite this, net profit fell to NLG 26. 3m ($A22m) compared with NLG 42. 2m ($A35m) for the corresponding period in 1991. Fokker has stated that the sharp downturn is due to high interest rates and the absence of results from participating interests. TNT Ltd has recorded a $195. 42m loss in the June year which came in worse than had been predicted. A major part of the loss resulted from Ansett Transport Industries and Eastwest/Skywest Aviation (Ansett lost $66. 4m while Eastwest lost $142. 6m) which are half owned by TNT, however, restructuring and write-offs are expected to show improvements this year. Cathay Pacific has reported profits for the first half of 1992 of $HK1258m ($A224m), 13% higher than the first half of 1991. Cathay believes that the worldwide economy is slowly recovering, however this still remains slow in Japan and Europe. Inflation in Hong Kong remains a concern as it continues to put pressure on profit margins. The Swire Group’s Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company (HAECO) has reported a profit for the first half of 1992 of $HK180. 5m ($A32m), an increase of 23% over the corresponding period last year. KLM has announced a net profit of NLG125m ($A104. 2m) for the financial year ended March 31, 1992; this is in contrast to 1991 when a loss of NLG 630M ($A525m) was recorded. The substantial improvement has resulted from cost cutting measures including reducing services on unprofitable routes, and improving labour productivity. Rolls-Royce has announced increased pretax profits of £20m ($A52m) for 1992, up from £11m ($A28m) in the same period last year. The results are attributed to the company strategy of broadening its business base. Australian Airlines has reported an operating loss before abnormals of $38. 5m for the 1991/92 financial year. This compares with an operating profit of $6. 4m for the same period last year.
