Practicing to Die!

Such is the term used by numerous air arms around the world to describe the somewhat dubious procedure of performing double asymmetric training exercises on live aircraft. A procedure which surprisingly is still being employed by the Royal Australian Air Force in view of the loss of a Boeing 707 practicing same last October.

Though the official accident investigation report is finally due to be released during the course of this issue (though even now it is still not known if this will be made fully public) it appeared from the beginning that the most likely cause of the 707 loss was through the crew performing double asym- metric training at something in the order of 5000ft. Double asymmetric training involves the two engines on one side of the aircraft being placed into flight idle to simulate a double engine failure. Though this type of training is necessary for obvious reasons the question is whether or not it should be conducted on actual aircraft.
