The USAF Thunderbirds aerobatic team has received eight General Dynamics F-16A Fighting Falcons. The Thunderbirds were previously equipped with Northrop T-38s but have been grounded since the loss of four pilots earlier this year caused by a mechanical fault in the lead aircraft which prevented a safe pull out from a low altitude loop. The re-equipped team will give their first performances next year.
• Figures released by the US General Aviation Manufacturers’ Association show that US GA production in the first half of 1982 is down nearly 50% compared with the same period in 1981, which was itself a depressed period. Production during the January-June 1982 period was 2,517 aircraft compared with 5,021 in 1981. Australian distributors of US GA aircraft are being adversely affected by the declining Australian dollar, high interest rates, increasing fuel, operating and maintenance costs, and inflation of 10% per annum over recent years.
