Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS) is quite simply the automation of Air Traffic Control (ATC) as we know it.

ATC is based primarily on three elements, communication, navigation and surveillance. However, each of these systems have a major limitation; They are strictly line of sight systems. Therefore, oceanic control is the most affected of all ATC functions, by present day technology.
