Boeing has released this artist's concept drawing for its proposed EX joined wing carrier bome AEW aircraft. Boeing is looking ahead to the eventual replacement of the US Navy's E-2 Hawkeye. The aircraft uses a diamond wing planform housing a phased array radar and will be powered by uprated variants of the TF34 which powers the S-3 Viking. The EX will also feature a third APU-type power/ant topower the radar and other systems. While the joined wing concept is not new, the EX would become the first aircraft to fly using this configuration if a programme go ahead is given. (Boeing)

Germany’s Peace Budget:
Even though Germanyhas agreed to be partof the Eurofighter development programme (but not production as yet- refer elsewhere)- it is generally putting the brakes on defence spending in the wake of “the end of military confrontation in Central Europe”. Germany’s defence plan for the next decade features a budget cutbyno less than 21% over previous estimates. Anti armour and anti warfare (ASW) programmes carry the brunt of the cuts but aviation programmes also suffer. Apart from the lingering uncertainty about Eurofighter, plans to procure a new maritime patrol aircraft to replace the Atlantique have been cancelled as has the purchase of an ASW variant of the multi national NH. 90. Additional Westland Lynxes will be purchased instead. Also cancelled are plans to convert 54 BO. 105 helicopters to the escort role have also been cancelled while the planned Tiger helicopter will have its role changed from that of purely anti armour to a multi role capability.

Lockheed has begun development of its long mooted ‘new generation Hercules II, the military C-130J and civilian L-100F.
