The Rolls-Royce RB211 family of turbofans has now accumulated over 50 million flying hours. RB211s first entered service in 1972 aboard the Lockheed Tristar, and since that time over 2000 units have been powering 757s, 767s and 747s in addition to Tristars. Right testing began last year of an RB211 powered Tupolev Tu-204, becoming the first Russian airliner to be powered by western engines. The RR engine also holds the current world reliability record, one unit accumulated over 24,267flight hours ona Tristar before removal for maintenance. The RB211 derived Trent is currently under development for the 777 and A330. (Rolls-Royce)

Boeing to Shed More Jobs:
The announcement by Boeing that it will reduce the production rates of its airliners (refer p6 Mar 93 AA) has resulted in the expected flow-on of loss of jobs at its major production plants.
Overall employment will decline by about 23,000 in 1993, of which 15,000 will be in Washington state, 6000 at Wichita and a further 2000 at other Boeing locations in the USA. An additional 5000 jobs will go in the first half of 1994. Total Boeing employment was 143,200 at the beginning of this year.
