Thai Airways International will focus on providing more value for passengers under new president Dr Piyasvasti Amranand, who commenced his term on October 20.

Piyasvasti, who has a PhD from the London School of Economics and is a former Minister for Energy, said he wants to bring his experience to turn around the loss-making airline. “I am under no illusion about the challenges facing aviation today, and that includes the challenges facing Thai,” Piyasvasti said.

Piyasvasti noted that the company’s board and senior management have addressed major liquidity issues facing the airline earlier this year with a turnaround plan that has already shown positive results. “But we still need to do more. We must continue to cut costs, radically improve our operational performance and enhance the efficiency and returns of every division within the airline,” he said.

Key to Piyavasti’s plans are to increase the quality of customer service, inflight catering and reading materials, while improvements in seats and inflight entertainment are expected to be complete within two years. Under a plan called ‘Mission TG100’, the company has set the goal of being consistently among the top three carriers in Asia and five in the world for overall customer service experience.
