Alliance Airlines has announced that it will base two Fokker 100s in Cairns from May as part of a greater push into northern Australia and the immediate international region.

“We are a national company and we are a significant part of the resources industry infrastructure in Australia, and Cairns is the perfect base for our next phase of growth, providing modern facilities for both domestic and regional international flight operations,” said managing director Scott McMillan.

From May 3, the airline will double its charter services through Cairns from five to ten per week, with a view to exploring further growth opportunities through northern Queensland and Papua New Guinea due to the increasing activity in the resources sector. The company will also employ up to 20 employees, including 14 cabin crew and three engineers, to support the new base.

Alliance Airlines flies a fleet of 11 Fokker 100s and six Fokker 50 turboprops from bases in Brisbane, Townsville, Adelaide and Perth, predominately servicing resource charter contracts. Its major clients include BHP Billiton, Gemco and MMG.
