Tiger Airways Australia has confirmed long-run industry speculation that it will commence flights from Avalon Airport, near Geelong.
The airport has announced that it will base two Airbus A320s at the airport to complement its services from Melbourne Tullamarine. The airline has not yet announced which cities it will fly to from Avalon.

“The new flights from Avalon Airport are further proof that we are well positioned to continue our growth and expansion in Australia as we have planned,” said the airline’s managing director Shelley Roberts, according to The Geelong Advertiser newspaper.
Ironically, Tiger’s main competitor Jetstar issued a statement which “welcomed the future arrival of a second domestic airline”, noting that the increased use of the infrastructure at Avalon would help to keep costs low. Jetstar currently operates flights from Avalon to Sydney and Brisbane, and previously moved all services to Adelaide and Perth to Tullamarine in order to compete against Tiger’s services on those routes.
