London’s airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick, were forced to close for six hours on May 17 due to new ash clouds from Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

The new ash clouds have also forced airport closures in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Netherlands, including Amsterdam-Schiphol and Rotterdam airports, which is expected to have a major knock-on effect for thousands of travellers.

Qantas has reported that three flights which departed Asia for London Heathrow have been diverted, with two landing in Frankfurt while a third flight has been diverted to Dubai. A spokesperson for the airline told Reuters that the flights will continue on to London as soon as possible, and at this stage it expects all other services to Europe to operate as scheduled.
