Boeing has been awarded a research and development contract of up to US$1.7bn (A$2bn) from the US Federal Aviation Administration as part of the FAA’s Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen).
Under the contract, Boeing will provide air traffic management modeling and simulation as well as the full integration of ground and airborne technologies and operations across all vehicle types, including commercial and military aircraft, general aviation, unmanned aerial systems, and rotorcraft. Boeing will perform work that will demonstrate NextGen procedures in real-time on a large scale within the current air traffic system.

NextGen is a comprehensive program by the FAA to modernise air traffic control in the US, which will include a major move towards ADS-B surveillance. A number of other companies, including Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, Jeppesen are involved in the program.
