Qantas will start a new nonstop Port Hedland-Melbourne service from September as part of an increase of capacity in and out of WA’s northwest over the coming months.
“We are very pleased to now add Port Hedland to the list of east-west routes that Qantas business and leisure customers can fly to direct from the eastern states, and appreciate the support of the Town of Port Hedland, which assisted us in ensuring this new service can commence as soon as possible,” said Qantas’s regional general manager WA Ian Gay.

The weekly service, flown by Boeing 737-800s, will commence from September 7, with launch fares starting from $249 one way. The airline is also adding a second weekly Karratha-Melbourne service which will also start in September, while it will also add three additional weekly services on the Perth-Paraburdoo route by the end of September.
The launch of the Port Hedland-Melbourne services comes as Strategic Airlines prepares to start a weekly Brisbane-Port Hedland service from August 3. Strategic had also planned to launch a direct service from Melbourne, but has now postponed the start of services on that route.
