Canberra based Brindabella Airlines has announced that it will commence services between Cobar and Sydney from September 24 after reaching an agreement with the Cobar Shire Council and local mining companies.

The flights will initially run daily with a Metro III aircraft with an additional service each Friday over a four month trial period.

“We’ve been inundated with inquiries from Cobar and surrounding communities – particularly Bourke – with government, businesses, community service providers and residents keen for an easier option than the current three hour drive to Dubbo to catch a Sydney flight,” said Brindabella CEO Jeff Boyd.

Boyd added that there had been significant interest in group bookings and charter flights from the mining sector, which could help to underwrite the viability of the service.

Cobar lost its link to Sydney in December 2008 after Regional Express subsidiary Air-Link terminated its services, forcing passengers from Cobar, Bourke, Coonamble, Lightning Ridge and Walgett to drive to Dubbo to catch a direct flight to Sydney.
