The latest report from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) on domestic airline activity showed continued strong growth in passenger traffic during June.
For the month there were 4.24 million passengers carried by Australia’s domestic and regional airlines, an increase of 9.6 per cent on June 2009. That pushed revenue passenger kilometres up by 9.3 per cent as capacity rose by 8.9 per cent. As a result of the faster growth in RPKs, industry load factor increased from 76 to 76.3 per cent for the month, while loads were up on nearly half of the routes with data recorded.

The Cairns-Melbourne showed the greatest growth in air traffic, with passenger numbers up 25.4 per cent. This was followed by Melbourne-Sydney (up 21.6 per cent), Gold Coast-Sydney (up 19.9 per cent), Cairns-Sydney (up 19.1 per cent) and Adelaide-Brisbane (up 19.0 per cent). The biggest decrease was on Adelaide-Canberra (down 15.0 per cent), followed by Ballina-Sydney (down 11.0 per cent), Brisbane-Hamilton Island (down 10.8 per cent) and Brisbane-Darwin (down 7.6 per cent).
