Boeing has announced a further revision to planned production rates on its 737 line, with 38 aircraft per month to be produced from the second quarter of 2013.

Boeing said that the increase in production rate was a function of the strong backlog of over 2000 737s, as well as expected options exercises and ongoing sales campaigns. Airlines want this innovative airplane sooner to renew their fleets to serve their customers,” said CEO Jim Albaugh. “We made this decision after careful evaluation by Boeing and our supplier partners.”

The new announcement comes after Boeing previously announced plans to lift output on the 737 line to 35 aircraft per month from early 2012 from the current rate of 31.5. It also comes after Airbus announced in August that it will raise output on its rival A320 line from the first quarter of 2012.
