IT issues hit Virgin again

Virgin Blue has experienced another computer issue which has led the delays of some flights, although the airline has not been forced to cancel any services.

According to various media reports, the airline’s New Skies check-in system experienced a “slowdown” on the morning of September 29 which forced airport agents to switch to manual check in and boarding procedures for a small period. Virgin Blue later issued a statement saying that the systems had been restored and that there were no cancellations, with passengers holding a reservation advised to proceed to the airport as normal. By the afternoon, the airline acknowledged on its website that there were still some delays but all flights were running.

The slowdown comes only days after the airline experienced a major outage of its computer reservations system after a hardware failure on September 26 which resulted in significant delays and flight cancellations across the country.

Reports out this morning have confirmed that Jetstar and other carriers, including Irish budget airline Ryanair, have also experienced outages with the Navitaire New Skies system, although none as severe as that experienced by Virgin Blue over the weekend. Virgin Blue implemented New Skies earlier this year, replacing the Open Skies system which was also run by Navitaire.
