What the new turboprops mean for regional aviation
The last few years have seen a major resurgence in the market for turboprops, with a number of new programs underway and some older designs seeing a renaissance.
Although many analysts were predicting the demise of turboprops in the regional airliner market during the 1990s and 2000s as regional jets took hold, the sustained high price of fuel has once again forced a number of airlines to embrace the superior operating economics of turboprops. As a result, sales of ATR and Bombardier turboprops have been growing over recent years, with the former recording a stellar burst of new aircraft sales during the Farnborough Airshow in July.
